What do CCAN attorneys do?
CCAN attorneys represent indigent parents and act as guardians ad litem for children who are the subject of child abuse and neglect cases in Family Court.
How do I become a CCAN attorney?
At this time the Family Court is not accepting any applications from attorneys interested in representing indigent parents and/or acting as guardians ad litem for children. The Court plans to resume accepting applications for the CCAN, juvenile delinquency, and GAL Panels in 2015 or on further order of the court. The Court is accepting applications for the Special Education Panel. The court is also re-establishing the Person in Need of Supervision(PINS), Mental Health, and Mental Habilitation Panels. These applications are due by June 7, 2013. Attorneys who are currently members of the PINS, Mental Health, or Mental Habilitation Panels must re-apply if they want to remain on the panels. You can find the application and instructions for applying on the court’s website: Family Courts Panels Application

What are the scheduling procedures for Family Court child abuse and neglect cases?
Please see the Procedures for the Scheduling of Child Abuse and Neglect Hearings and the 72 Hour Scheduling Chart.
How do CCAN attorneys sign up for days they will be available to accept court appointments?
CCAN/GAL Panel attorneys sign up online for days they will be available to accept cases. The online signup takes place on the 10th of each month (or next business day if the 10th is a weekend or holiday) between 8:30 and 5:00. Attorneys establish a password protected account on the signup website which can be accessed here.
Signup covers pickup days for the following calendar month. Parents’ attorneys can sign up for three days and GALs two days. Attorneys can make changes in their pickup days themselves only during the signup day. If changes are needed after that or if attorneys have any questions, they may contact a CCAN staff member at (202) 879-1406.
