Probate Division
- Large Decedents' Estates (ADM) are opened for deceased persons who, at the time of death, lived in the District of Columbia and owned real property located in the District of Columbia and/or other assets of any value. A personal representative will be appointed to administer the estate.
- Small Decedents' Estates (SEB) are opened for deceased persons who, at the time of death, lived in the District of Columbia and owned assets with a total value of $40,000.00 or less.
- Foreign Decedents' Estates (FEP) are opened for people who, at the time of death, lived outside the District of Columbia but owned assets in the District of Columbia.
- Wills (WIL) should be filed within 90 days after the death of the testator. The will should be original and executed in accordance with the law of the District of Columbia.
- Intervention Proceedings (INT/IDD) are opened for adults who are incapacitated and in need of a guardian or a conservator. A guardian is responsible for the physical well-being of an incapacitated adult; a conservator is responsible for managing assets.
- Guardianship of Minors' Estates (GDN) are opened for children under the age of 18 who live in the District of Columbia and who are entitled to receive assets.
